Even knowing I am only 5 feet tall I am still a great actor. I have been small all my life and I am very successful in show business. There is nothing that I can't accomplish in show business. It all started when I was born on November 17, 1944 in Neptune, New Jersey. I was raised with my parents and had a sister. Life was not so good because whenever I go to school I usually used to get picked on because of my height. I went to Oratory High School, grammar school, a prep high school in Summit, and Our Lady Mount Carmel. I attended a lot of schools. My first time acting was at a play when I was a student at Our Lady Mount Carmel. The play was called
St. Frances of Assisi
; I was a star of the show.
Growing up, whenever I went to dances I could not dance with girls because of my height. College was not an option for me because my family did not have a lot of money for college. I really did not want to be an actor for a career, I actually quit acting once. My sister asked me to be a hairdresser at her salon, I took the job. I took it because I thought that I would probably meet girls there and hopefully have a real relationship with someone. No sparks happened so; I thought I wanted to be a cosmetics specialist. I went to American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York to learn how to be one. While I was there I also took acting lessons. During those acting lessons is when I started to realize that acting was my true calling. I finally quit cosmetics and went to acting. It was the best of decision of my life!
I was a little scared when I started acting. I was the new guy who was trying to be good at acting. I met the great actor Michael Douglas at O’Neal Theater in Waterford Connecticut. He became close friend of mine and helped me with my acting. He was just giving me pointers. One day I was looking at an advertisement that said there was an audition for
In Cold Blood
in Hollywood. So, what I did was move to Los Angeles. Unfortunately I did not get the audition and instead I was a car parker at Sunset Strip (Back then I used to have hair on my head). I still wanted to act and did not get acting jobs in LA so, I moved back to New York and got seven Off Broadway plays. In one of those seven Broadway plays I met Rhea Pearlman the love of my life. We got married in 1982. We had three children, Lucy, Gracie, and Jake. Michel Douglas asked me to be in a movie called
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
. I was jumping with joy when I heard that I got a part in the movie. After the movie became so successful, I started to get offers to star in television shows and movies. I was in
and hated the script that the director wrote. Then I actually directed a few episodes of
axi. Probably I was better than the actual director. I was in also in
Batman, Matilda and One Flew Over the Mountain
. I became a successful director and producer after that. Each of their movies plays or shows that I was part of was important to me because being part of them helped me get to where I am today. I also proved to myself that I was a success. New Jersey has put me in the Hall of Fame because of all my accomplishments. Also, they said "it is outrageous not to put me on the Hall of Fame". I am grateful for all that has happened and how far I have gotten. Acting has made me what I am today and I am proud of that.
